Day 3

A beautiful bright sunny Sunday in Venice! A perfect day to take the vaporetto to the island of Murano! Apparently these were the thoughts of every tourist in Venice as well as every Italian in Italy. The vaporetto were PACKED wall to wall. Sardines have more personal space. We had to change vaporettos mid way and both were similarly jam packed but we made it to the beautiful island of Murano where we walked from one end to the other enjoying all the incredibly beautiful glass and the picturesque views.

Fantastic glass sculpture

This adventure had made us hungry and we found a restaurant that has been a family owned establishment for 100 years with a lovely outdoor dining area. There was a full menu but they also made wood burning oven pizzas and it was time for PIZZA!! And, for a change, Italian beer.
Notice that we EACH have a pizza....and we ate almost every bite!

After our leisurely and delicious lunch, we took the vaporetto to San Giorgio Maggiore Church, the large church on the island across from Sat. Mark's Square. At least that's where we INTENDED to take the vaporetto but a small error and we found ourselves on the small island of Redentore instead where we had to take yet ANOTHER vaporetto to arrive on the island of San Giorgio. Another beautiful church with magnificent art and we also took the elevator to the top of the bell tower for spectacular views of Venice. The church was designed by Palladio 400 years ago. There was a modern sculpture in the nave of the church by a Spanish sculptor. The sculpture is made up of letters of eight languages and is in the shape of a hand in blessing.
Difficult to visualize but a hand in blessing

A short vaporetto ride after and we were at San Marco (St. Mark's) Square. it was after 5 PM and the basilica and other sights were closed so the crowds were minimal and we were able to walk around and appreciate the grandeur of the square and its architecture before making our way back home.
No need for dinner tonight other than a little salad!
